Scope and content

A copy of the sheet music for ‘Himno de la Independencia de Brasil’. This patriotic song was composed in 1822, as a commemoration of Brazil’s declaration of independence from Portugal. The melody was composed by Don Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, and was popular until his abdication in 1831. A note in English on the first page suggests that this copy was compiled by the organist of the Cathedral in São José in 1828. The note is initialled ‘R.W.’ who seemingly visited Brazil in that year.
