A clipping of an image of performers from the named the ‘Veterans of Variety’ outside the Theatre Royal on Hawkins Street in Dublin. The original caption notes that the group is about to make their way (in a horse-drawn coach) to Marlborough Hall in Glasnevin to perform in a benefit concert for wounded soldiers. Constructed in 1908, Marlborough Hall originally functioned as a teacher training college. In 1917 the British War Department took ownership of the building, and it was converted into a convalescent home for sick and wounded Irish soldiers, staffed by members of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Marlborough Hall was handed over to the Provisional Government in February 1922. It was later used as convalescent hospital for National Army soldiers recuperating from injuries sustained during the Civil War. The building is still in existence and now houses the Whitehall College of Further Education. The clipping is taken from the ‘Freeman’s Journal’ (15 June 1923).
