Note
James Thomas Knowles (1831-1908) was an architect and later a journalist and editor. In 1869 he founded the Metaphysical Society, a debating society of which Gladstone was a charter member. The aim of the Metaphysical Society was to encourage a rapprochement between religion and science by inviting public representatives of faith and no faith to meet and exchange ideas. Gladstone published an article on the supposed links between Dante and Oxford in a monthly review magazine titled ‘The Nineteenth century’ in June 1892.
