Monsignor Michael J. Murphy (1848-1941) was born in Kilkenny. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1871 for the Diocese of Ossory. Monsignor Murphy variously served as Professor of Theology and Vice President of Carlow College (1871-1886). He was parish priest in Kildare Town (1886-1901) and Maryborough (Portlaoise) (1901-1941); and served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin (1886-1941). In 1883, Monsignor Murphy was chosen as Dignissimus for the position of Bishop of Ossory, and he was twice nominated for the position of Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin. He served as chairman of the asylum board and several county committees in County Laois.
