The son of a Church of Ireland Rector, Douglas Hyde was an eminent playwright, Irish language scholar, and folklorist. In 1893 he founded the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) which rapidly became a popular cultural movement. In the public sphere, Hyde served as the first President of Ireland from 1938 until his retirement in June 1945. He died on 12 July 1949 and was accorded a state funeral which was held on 14 July. His funeral service took place in the Church of Ireland St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Hyde was buried in Frenchpark, County Roscommon, where had spent most of his childhood. The volume contains numerous newspaper tributes and eulogies and some original material in Hyde’s own hand. The volume is a ‘Richview Account Series Book’ printed by Browne & Nolan in Dublin.
