Scope and content

A collection of cartes de visite assembled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., the editor of ‘The Capuchin Annual’. Cartes de visite were a form of card photograph popular from around 1860 to the early 1900s, typically used for portraiture. The common construction of these cards consisted of a thin albumen print mounted on a thicker card backing and measuring about 10 cm x 6 cm. Albumen prints generally fade with age resulting in a slightly glossy and warm-toned hue. The backs of the cartes were normally printed with the photographer’s name, address and insignia. Most of the cartes in the file were produced by Irish photographic studios, particularly in Dublin and Cork. Only a small number of the prints have identifying annotations.
