      Note

Located on a hillside in Glounthaune/Glanmire, just outside Cork, the Gothic-style tower was built by Father Theobald Mathew’s friend, William O’Connor, between 1843 and 1845. It was designed by the Cork-born architect and builder Robert Howard. A life-sized statue of Father Mathew (upper right), a replica of a design by the Irish sculptor John Hogan, was placed in front of the tower. After a period of dereliction in the latter half of the twentieth century, the tower was restored and taken over for private residential use.
