‘The Toiler’ was established supposedly to advance the interests of labour and protect Irish industry and commerce. ‘The Toiler’s’ stated aim was to crush Larkinism. It was backed by the employers of Dublin, including William Martin Murphy, with the intention to break the Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU).
