Note
‘The Catholic Fireside’ made its first appearance in December 1878 as a special supplement to ‘The Catholic Times’ newspaper in Britain. It was so successful that it was subsequently continued as a monthly penny magazine; in 1893 it was made a weekly publication. By 1902 it marketed itself as the most widely circulated Catholic weekly in the world. ‘The Catholic Times’ and its various subsidiary publications appealed largely to Catholics of Irish descent living in Britain and was particularly noted for its championing of various Irish nationalists.
