Born Frederick Charles Anson, Peter Frederick Anson, as he was later known, was the son of Admiral Charles Eustace Anson, a Royal Navy officer. Anson was raised in a family which was historically prominent in the Church of England. At the age of twenty-one, he joined the Anglican Benedictine community on Caldey Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales, but converted to Catholicism in 1913. He joined the Third Order of Saint Francis (a religious fraternity of lay preachers who followed the Rule of Saint Francis) in 1922 and took the name Peter. He later enjoyed a prolific career as an author, publishing nearly forty titles, many of them on religious subjects. His deeply held personal faith and his love for all things maritime provided the primary inspiration for much of his artistic work.
