The article is undated but the reference in the text to the Royal Hospital being the residence of Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913), 1st Viscount Wolseley, dates the illustrations to circa 1890-94. Although the text states that Wolseley is ‘England’s greatest general’, he was actually born in Dublin. He served as Commander-in-Chief of British forces in Ireland from 1890 to 1894. Regarded as the ‘most brilliant general of the Victorian era’, in 1895 Wolseley was promoted to field-marshal and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the entire British Army, a position he held until 1900.
