Daniel J. Allman was a leading figure in the IRA in County Kerry during the War of Independence. As Commandant of the East Kerry Brigade, he led an ambush of a train carrying British troops at Headford Junction railway station near Killarney. At least fourteen people died in the incident; eight British soldiers, two IRA volunteers (Commandant Daniel J. Allman and Lieutenant Jimmy Baily) and four civilians (including an informer killed after the ambush).
