A clipping taken from the ‘Irish Travel’ magazine (August 1942) reflecting on the destruction of Coole House near Gort in County Galway, the former home of Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory (1852-1932). Coole House was a three-storey residence built in the late eighteenth century for Robert Gregory (1727-1810), the owner of the extensive Coole Park estate. Isabella Augusta Persse married into the Gregory family in 1880 and resided in Coole House until her death. As noted in the photograph caption, Lady Gregory wrote most of her plays and books while living here and hosted many of the leading figures in the Irish literary revival including William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge, and Seán O’Casey. The clipping is taken from the ‘Irish Travel’ magazine (August 1942).
