Scope and content
Copies of official correspondence (letters, memorandums and telegrams) regarding the necessity of the Vatican filling the vacant see of the Archbishopric of Dublin. Includes copies of several communications from Joseph P. Walshe, secretary of the Department of External Affairs. One of the letters (dated 7 March 1940) reads ‘The Irish government feel that the filling of the vacant See of Dublin is now of the greatest importance. The European War and the recrudescence of the activities of extreme Republicans revolting against the State, pursuing revolutionary and immoral means to achieve their aims, have created a situation where the appointment to the Archbishopric of Dublin of a man of great spiritual qualities and a distinguished representative of the Universal Church has never been more urgent’. The copy correspondence is titled ‘Provvista di Chiesa’.
