Note
Born in Charleville, County Cork, Daniel Joseph Begley moved to Dublin and joined the Irish Volunteers on their foundation in 1913. He was involved in the attack on the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park on the first day of the Easter Rising (24 April 1916). He later joined the rebels occupying the Four Courts and fought there for the remainder of the insurrection. Following the surrender, he was arrested and interned in Knutsford Jail and Frongoch Camp until the end of August 1916. Begley later joined the National Army (subsequently the Irish Defence Forces), reaching the rank of captain in 1932.
