Scope and content
A collection of twenty-six original bulletins, printed letters, and reports published by George Grierson (1763-1821), the King’s Printer in Ireland, relating to the 1798 Rebellion. Includes extracts from printed letters and accounts by Viscount Gosford, General Ralph Dundas, Lieutenant Macaulay (Antrim Milita), Reverend James McGhee (Vicar of Clonmore, County Carlow), Lieutenant Colonel Longfield (Royal Cork Militia), Major General Sir James Duff, Major General Henry Johnson, and General Gerard Lake.
The letters and bulletins report news of various victories achieved by the government forces over the Irish rebels throughout the country. The bulletins were likely published to allay the fears of the loyalist population during the rebellion. The broadsides appear to be numbered sequentially. The file includes a letter from Edward Massey, a Dublin-based bookseller and antiquarian, to Fr. Senan Moynihan offering the 1798 bulletins for sale for £20 (25 September 1948). With an original folio case supplied by Edward Massey.
