Scope and content

This bound pamphlet collection was primarily assembled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. as part of his personal library.

The collection offers a diverse look at Ireland’s ecclesiastical, political, and cultural landscape in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Much of the material is directly related to and largely produced during the revolutionary period in the early twentieth century. The broad subjects include the Home Rule crisis (1912-14), World War I (1914-18), the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence (1919-21), and the Civil War (1922-23).

Key Features of the Collection

Historical Scope: Includes rare, printed pamphlets and volumes covering the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, and the Civil War.

Cultural Focus: Features a significant number of publications from the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) and works by authors like Douglas Hyde and Daniel Corkery, highlighting the Irish language revival.

Religious & Social Themes: Contains records of lay sodalities, total abstinence associations (Pioneer movement), and items related to Catholic history and literature.

Eclectic Range: Notable specific items include a Thomas Davis centenary souvenir programme, a pictorial guide to 1916, and souvenir publications marking various religious and church events. Also included are some official government publications and items from private organizations such as patriotic and volunteer societies, religious associations, and several republican affiliates and organisations.

It appears that Father Senan bound the original pamphlets together to form a reference library for the Capuchin Publications Office.
