My dear Father in Christ,
Many thanks for your letter and all it contained. I am sorry to hear of Martha’s carelessness regarding the boys’ help and hope your words "I shall go now" mean she will attend to the boy—not that she left you.
She gave us all the impression the other day that she does not realize her position and responsibility. I hope the boy is better and that none of the boys' remarks were written home.
Miss Frienne rang me up before leaving. She is considering the question but greatly fears herself she is not able for it. I would have no doubt about it if you and Dom David were
There, I think she would manage to place well and see to its interest. and do a great deal for Glenstal. We must only pray to God to guide her to do what is best for her own soul and Glenstal.
But certainly, you will have to make a change at Christmas, and I pray you may get through these next few weeks. It is God alone that can do it, for, humanly speaking, you have much too much to do.
You were very kind to send me that letter of yours in French and the beautiful and so true description of Dom David. It was because I thought you had such an opinion of him that I asked you straight in my letter the question, because I was mistaken once. I knew this for certain, so I was free to write fully to you.
There is no misunderstanding between us or Dom David. He will be a tremendous loss, as you say, even for two months, but he need rest and change and will, with God's help, come back feeling better and able to be again what you describe him to be to you in that letter.
I look forward to seeing him on Thursday. Ask him to come out here as soon as he is finished with his business in Dublin, and we can give him something to eat before sailing.
How do you like your beautiful gift? I am very excited over it, and my real devotion is to the cross in all its forms. As I am not sure what kind of chapel we will have at present, I think it is better to have it made on a stand. But do you not think it is rather short for the 14 " figure? I would have thought the 24" would look better, but then this might not be the style of cross you propose. As I am not artistic, I must leave this to you.
It is the very nicest remembrance I could have from Glenstal. We shall always be united in the great work of love and sacrifice under the shadow of the cross. I thank you from each one in M.M.M.
No further news except a cable from Mgrs. Rebere to His Excellency to say it was not necessary for me to go to Monte Carlo. Like your great Saint of today, I try to keep absolute faith in God, no matter how dark and impossible things seem.
As soon as I have news, I shall let you know.
I hope to hear all goes well and that there is nothing seriously wrong with the boy. Risk nothing, even if it means getting in a nurse temporarily to help.
I pray with all my heart for you, dear Father.
Your obedient and grateful child,
Marie
Will you please have Mass said for Marie and all our intentions on Saturday?

Dear Father Pior,
Miss Breen & Miss Corr tried every way
possible to manage a day trip to Glenstal it
is utterly impossible to my mind & would
bear no spiritual fruits. Last night late
they came out to ask me could they
stay the night in the Village or anywhere
as they are very anxious to be present at
the Mass & Office -
They are writing to Miss O'Rourke, I
have instructed her to ask Dom David to
advise as to whether he considers it wise
for their soul & contentment, if he does
then to approach you for the necessary
permissions to arrange for the room in
the Village, meals in the Priory with them
& to send a wire Yes or No -
I think it is for many reasons very
good such girls as these should see the
Ceremonies at Glenstal, it will get letters known
in Suftin & may be the means of
bringing you vocations.
I leave the decision with you, if it
causes you the least incontinence or that you

think it too much distraction for my
daughters just say no to Miss O’ Rourke
& she can wire -
I am just getting up for Mass so
must dine in haste -

Dear Father Prior
Many thanks for you two notes, I
am delighted to hear you are in full swing
again. I suppose all the boys are back
by now, very well and happy.
" As regard Ms Fitzgerald, I think
the best thing of all is to send the Prospectus
if you have it ready with a note saying
you hope call in the near future.
I shall ask her to come out to see me
as it will be sometime before I am able to
call on her. I suppose you know that the
Rev. Father Trafford is over in Dublin for a few
weeks.
" Rang up Dorthy O'Rielly this
morning, unfortunately only last Friday
she arranged with an Irish girl. Dorothy
is very disappointed as she would so much
like to have a Belgium girl. Perhaps later
on, if this girl does not prove satisfactory

we can reopen the position again.
3 If you have the envelope of my first letter will you please look at the date of the post-mark from Dublin.
4 The Nuncio has promised to talk over
the matter of being directly under Propaganda
on my next visit. I do not want to
discuss further till I have seen you & we
come to some definite plan as to what you
believe would be the best plan to realize
bringing into being M. M. M. one thing very
definite from the advice from Fr. Nolan of the
Corporation of Religions - Fr. Vanerselon & the Nuncio
is to go very slowly - to start as seculars
having according to a religious rule drawn up
to suit our works - We shall of course
eventually have to seek a Bishops appropriation
but the time is not ripe for that as yet. We
have really all we need from His grace to
make the start at Glenstal, if we can
continue both works ratiofactory - Fact & prudence
will have to be our virtues as regards His
Grace. We must take certain risks in faith,
otherwise, God’s work will never be accomplished
if we do not take it at Glenstal we shall
--- Page 3 ---

have to make a start elsewhere, perhaps
Dublin under similar circumstances.
I await your visit with joy & shall
come to no definite conclusions, till
I have heard your views & received your
advice on the questions in my last letter.
Mrs. Leyden wrote asking permission
to help Mai at serving the Supper, I
am answering "Yes" if it is according
to your wishes - Mrs. O’Rourke arrived
on the 11th D. V. will help to divide the
work, and give them all a little time
for recreation, prayer, rest & time to look
after their personal things - mending etc.
I always feel the great will of the present
day is that continual rush no time for
reflection etc. & the real work of God.
Do you or Dom David by any chance know
anything about the "Benedictine Missionaries"

think it would be well to have the toe x-rayed
see how the bone is - He gave Miss O'Rourke
a good till of health.
Miss O'Rourke is greatly looking forward to her
start at Glenstal where I hope above all she
will develope on some religious principles
after the example of the Sons of St. Benedict and
Don Maurion- Think there is a very good
foundation to build on - she will have more
difficulties than Miss Leyden as she realizes
things very keenly & has a high idea of what
a religious should be - she also realizes very
much the responsibility the first few members have.
Please remember me to all the Monks I know
they all pray for me, I need them badly
a long illness is a time of great trials & one
needs great grace, not to fail in patience
absolute adornment of love etc. - then where to
draw the line - everything at present seems
so far away from all I aspire after - and
yet though temptation & periods of depression
are great at times, I am happy as I know
it is what God wants of me at present &
His Will is my only real happiness -
Have taken a tig responsibility & steps in asking
Miss O'Rourke to resign - I trust God to quide us
