              My dear Father Prior,
I am sorry to see you have these
domestic troubles on your return - I received
letters from Lizzie & Mai - Lizzie gave me to
understand things did not go so well with
her & Fr. John during your attence, he cut down
Things. ? - I have had no letter from Matron.
I shall answer your letter as it comes.

              1. I can understand Matron wishing to have her
dinner at 12-30, for the reason she gives, also
she will receive her meal hotter & freshly cooked
as she shares the same food as the boys-
I do not quite understand why she waited
to do it during your attendance, so far I have
no grounds to believe her attitude towards us
                all has changed.

              2. Matron may realize how difficult it is for
you to be present at times when they need
supervision in the kitchen & offered on this
account but she always gave me to understand.

              --- Page 2 ---
4 Lizzi asked me about marmalade , this is the time
& it would save money, if you think she
has the time to do it during the term -
It costs 8o a lb. to say 41/2 to make - I can
send down the oranges prepared from Ruowhs in
              Suthin -
Will you please give the enclosed papers
to Dom David, I shall write to him during
the week-end - The enclosed letter is from
Bishop Herry Clep. Southern Region. He could
perhaps read it to Miss Leyden & O’ Rourke
it will help to give them courage to face
all the difficulties ahead, me producing a work
so essential for souls on the mission-field -
Please remember me to Matron & all -
Hope your [Junju] is guests well -
I was in with the Doctor on Tuesday he
found my foot greatly improved, I try to
stand & walk on it a little each day -
a few weeks of air & sunshine ought to
make me much stronger & the massage is
helping also - it is all now expense but if
it helps quickly to recovery it is better
I do as you say as regards lent & try to
practise greater humility & charity - your child for God-
              Sr Mary

              --- Page 3 ---
3 is difficult & just coming after your absence.
I have heard no mention of any change in her attitude
towards Miss O’R. & Leyden - except for
the change of the hour of meal.

              1. I would give Lizzie a very severe
warning & mention the boys are complaining
etc. The injury it will do the school etc.
I would be she to prepared if you & Matron
found it better to let either Miss O' Rourke & Miss Lyden into help Cook with the
cooking in the morning, preparing vegetables
dishes etc. Mary could then do the heavy cleaning
up stairs & after dinner return to the kitchen for
scrubbing etc. This might interfere with the spiritual
dutites of one of M. M. M., this change could be arranged
with Don David, if you think it wise.
              2. I fear there little releases will always
creep in unless there is constant supervision
                • and I fear F. John will always be an
upsetting influence which is due mostly to his
                  Death, language.
I do not think it will be many more months
now till I return. I shall do what I can
on these points in writing to Cook,
if you wish me to interfere.

              --- Page 4 ---
she preferred to leave nothing to do with the Domestic
Staff. I as I told you thanked her in my
last letter, for all she had done during my attence
in helping you, & for the way she had arranged
the works for Miss D'Rourke & Miss Legden & the
spirit of peace & union that she had maintained.
I told her I had received letters from Lizzie
complaining of Mary had that I did not like
to interfere as you & she were on the spot
but that I was quite ready to write to you if she
              thought it would improve matters.
When I receive an answer to my
letter I shall be in a better position to give
you advice on No. 2. For the present I should
leave things as you have arranged, unless you find the burden too much with all your responsibilities & extra work.
If there was anything broo against M. M. M.
it would be a mistake to give over complete
control, my position would become very
difficult on my return but I really believe
& hope her offer was to save me any worries
now so till we know Matron better &
especially room to No. 1 I feel sure it is
better to leave things as they are - The question

Feast of the Assumption (15th August). Letter to Prior.

              Caritas
              MONKSTOWN.
              Eve of the Assumption
              1934
              Dear Father Prior
              Since writing
              to Dom
              David I heard the Nurse
              Rockwell College is leaving
              as they are getting Nuns
              to look after things.
              enclose the answer I receiv
              from
              Sr. Mc Carthy
              to the
              letter I wrote asking
              was
              true
              that Miss Foley
              was leaving on receivin
              this
              this morning
              Fr. McCarthy to communicate at
once with Miss Foley to hope
              to get in touch
              with her personally
              very soon. In the meantime
              you or Dom Gerard might
like to write to some of
              your personal friends
              among the Fathers as to
              the character of Miss Foley
Miss O' Hanlon is a very
              good nurse looks capable
              is good at minding

              She is bright and was
              to. wards
              much attracted
              the spiritual atmosphere
              at Glenstal she was
              educated by the Holy Child
Nuns at Harrogate is I think
              deeply religious without much
              show + I feel Greenbank
              if she came to MONKSTOWN
              Glenstal as Nurse. Matron
              she would be anxious
              help in every way
              to. wards
              the success of the college.
She is very fond of children
              She has no college experience
              but has acted as Matron
              in a hospital.
              the finds the salary very
              small + owing
              to the
              reasons I mentioned
              in
              my letter
              to Dom David
              could not possibily
              take the position
              at Glensta
              I promised her
              I would put
              the
              facts of her case before
              you

              • see if you would be
                able to give a
                salary on the
                other hand she realizes how
                difficult things must be
                or you till the college
                increases. I shall keep in
                touch with (in case others
                her
                fail. The salary
                has
                Always been considered
                a little bit small.
                should like very much to
                know your wish on
                this
                Matter.
                There is no use returning
to Glenstal till I am sure
                a
                Matron.

              Before deciding
              as
              to whether
              it is necessary
              have
              three maids with the cook
              I would like
              to know
              you have any
              more aplicati
              for next term. Has
              turned up
              yet
              I
              Baptist says
              they
              have
              decided
              to send
              their boy
              to Glenstal
              I regret
              to have to say
              fear the Fitzgeralds have
              decided
              to send their
              boy to Clongowes, there
              just

              a very slight chance still
              perhaps if you wrote enclosing
              a prospectus or
              Letter still if one o
the fathers were in town and
              called. The Mother is not
              keen on Clongowes. I shall
call this week + do my
              best
              I met Frank McCann on
              Sunday, he did not seem
              upset by the change,
              he
              is coming back
              May I have the permission
              to get somethings that are
              necessary
              or
              the kitchen
              and household at Glenstal.
As Mr. O' Toole in down with
you will be glad to hear I am
in touch with two very fine
              vocation I trust
              God to direct to. wards
              the Medical Missionary Society
but I fear even if they do
              join
              the little company they
will not be free to come
              tell November or December.
              So I shall probably
              have
              to staff Glenstal with paid
              hands
              this term
I am very sorry to hear of
the illness of Br. Conrad I feel
very much for him he was so

              • happy.
                Are you satisfied with the
                present cooking
I shall write I again when I hear
                from Miss Foley
                Please remember me to Dom

Various matters prior to Father Priors visit. From Mary Martin to Prior of Glenstal.

              Dear Father Prior
This letter will probably reach you in time for the feast of the Immaculate Conception with all my very best wishes to you, all the community, teachers, boys, and staff. I shall be much united with Our Lady and you all on that day in special prayers and know you will not forget me in yours.
I have not written much lately as I await your visit to talk all matters over. Also, the getting up so early only for an hour leaves me very tired, and I have not been feeling quite so well the last few days. The big toe is still inclined to be septic, so I fear I shall not be allowed home this week but probably next week.
Hope you have good news of Rose

If she was insured she should of course
draw that from The day she left Glenstal
untill she is fit again On the other
hand if she is not qualified for the
Insurance you will have to pay her till she
goes home + give her notice that you are
              not needing her next term.
I enclose the dining room equipment
book for Mai so that she will leave
all in order before she goes on her
holiday + hand over the silver to Fr
Hohn_ also he book with particulars of
maid up to time of my leaving Glenstal
the wages as received from nt John
to give him. I have £1. belonging to Mary
as you will see by her account.
Is it time that one of your Fathers
( a german) is at Beaumount ill. I was
told there was + I cannot think who it can
be. I hope if so he is not seriously ill.
Would it be too much trouble, if Matron has
the time to pack my things to bring them up
leave them at the Station my sister can call
for them- I enclose the key of small cupboard

you might give to Matron as all my letters
are in that + I should like to have
them when I get home _
I am not sure whether I shall be here
or at home when you come up but
all I wish to convey to you is that
you are heartily, welcome to stay at
Greenbank for a night or more if it
is convenient for you on the other hand
I quite understand Mr gooss is Mrs G. staf
will be more convenient as they are
nearer the city but if I were at home
you did not want to waste the day
hours with me you could come out when
you have all your business finished
have dinner then have a long talk
and stay the night. However I leave
everything to you to arrange as suits you
              best.
              With grateful thanks for everything
your obedient child in Jesus + Mary
              Sr. Mary
We shall arrange about the staff when we meet
I asked Matron to give you all her views. M.M

Epiphany Sunday - letter continued. 1935.

              Dear Father Prior
I continue from where I stopped
early this evening to catch post.
I am grived & hear Dom firard
has received such alarming reports, they
were certainly not from me or any of my
subjects. I am ashamed to say I have
never written to him since he paid me
a visit in '96' I was intending writing
to him to-morrow & shall certainly do so
              now - I never felt so happy about M. M. M.
& as far as I know my relations with Glenstal
are unchanged. I have always longed since
Dom firard left to talk all these matters over
with you, incuse you would have any difficult
views or plans for Glenstal. I am always
prepared for different outlooks from individuals
& could quite understand some not wishing
to take on the extra [f]burden of M. M. M.
with all the responsibilities already attached
to the foundation at Glenstal, as I fully realize,

only too well, how little help we can give in return for all we receive from you and your Monks. —
Ishall deal solely with M. M. M. from
our point of view, having received definite
encouragement to go on, hard as the task seems.
Fr. Kelly has just been in Dublin for a few
days and we discussed all the problems,
especially Fr. Vermersch's letter in detail,
which gives me courage & definite lives to
make a start, he does not minimize the
difficulties of such a work, wisely adding,
"Now, if God will, He can move every difficulty"
I go confidently ahead believing if it is
His Will He will bring the work & a successful
issue, if I and my daaphtus (as you so nicely
put it), correspond to His paces and inspirations
at each step, if it is not His Will the work
will fail. I love Him equally in failure as
in success, also, I may never be the one
to bring it into being, Ishall do my very
best to try and sow the seed.
From the beginning Iwant to make one point
very clear :--- I have no desire to start as
a Diocesan Congregation - All Missionary

              --- Page 3 ---
              3/
Bishops advise me to aim at being directly
under "Congregation Propaganda de Fede" first
have their approbation & then apply to an Irish
              Bishop.
              1) Iam enclosing a few letters that
deal with the period of Dom Gerardo's
approach to His Excellency, Archbishop Harty,
these will give you as much knowledge and
information as Ihave on this matter.
              2) Fr Kelly with his knowledge of me,
now that Fr Vermersch says it is possible,
advises me after having spent a “year at Glenstal under your direction and
Spirtual formation to apply for a dispensation
from having to do another noviciate. What would yous & Dom Davids opinion (See on this point? –
The time has come to make a very
definite and deliberate start. Istill have the great desire to have myself & the first
few pioneers at least instructed and prepared
for their private vows under Benedictine influence.
Do you think with the responsibilities I have
of trying to establish this work that we can
come to some suitable agreement so that for you and
              M. M. M.

              --- Page 4 ---
              4
My idea would be to get my daughters around
me, do all together a years novitiate for
private vows and then as individuals join a
3nd Order. When the year was completed Iwould
like to send these I consider suitable for their
training as nurses - My idea is also to train one of my daughters to be able to take my place at Glenstal during my absence, which
from time to time will be unavoidable
during the first few years -
Now the difficulties that present them-
              selves to me for M. M. M. are: -
              a) Accommodation for more than three
at a time, this may work out alright,
as some will be ready for training moving
on to make room for others
              b) If we were running the whole of
the domestic work, we would need to be a
bigger staff than would be employed as
seculars, otherwise there would not be
sufficient time for a regular life of prayer, Sp. reading conferences. It would also be necessary for them to have a certain amount
of time for study, recreation in common &
propaganda work, as we are not earning.

              --- Page 5 ---
              5
              c)
              It would mean dismissing secular
staff according as we had subjects to
take their place, this would be very
difficult to do especially if the present staff, Mai Lizzie & Mary are really satisfactory
              d) Getting in contact with vocations &
              meeting future subjects.
              e) Holiday time. Shall & we be able to
              remain on at Glenstal? -
Ido not see any difficulty at
present as regards or position and
understanding with His Grace, The Archbishop
of Cashel, you will see by my letter that I clearly mentioned my ultimate
aim, he is aware of this and still gave the permission for me to go with my companions to Glenstal, helping in any way we could & receiving in return a spiritual formation on religious principles.
You will also probably see difficulties
on your side which we can discuss when we next meet. D. V. Ithought it
would be helpful for you to have the enclosed before & perhaps you would like to talk things over with Don David & your council.

              --- Page 6 ---
              6
Like you I hate money question, my desire
would always be to give generously wherever I
could help but now I am faced with great
responsibilities as God’s instrument of being a Mother
              to M. M. M. & circumstances having changed
slightly at least for a year I felt found to
ask you for a little more help. As you ask me
I shall draw up a project that we can discuss,
perhaps you will do one also from what you
Think just. It is really impossible for me in
one way, as I can never balance spiritual
graces & privileges with material natures,
you see for that reason my utter poverty spiritually
              & materialistic
As you see, none of these difficulties are very
dis & can mostly be overcome by coming to
a definite understanding and agreement for the time
being, say one year at least. A time may
come when it will be absolutely necessary to have a house in Dublin -
My real difficulty is a matter of conscience
& a question that causes me much thought. -
I think you know how much I love the work of God
at Glenstal, my longing to see you will established
in Ireland with a good College - My one fear

              --- Page 7 ---
              7
is having the responsibility of M. M. M. as to do
Will for me, will I do justice in the position
I hold for Glenstal. I have prayed much over
this, I see it is perhaps possible if I were more
obedient to Drs, especially in the matter of manual
work, I must use my more intellectual gifts for
His Glory governing powers etc, and also to preserve
the very limited physical strength at my
disposal. I know I failed badly in this
              last year, circumstances practically made
it impossible to do otherwise now I feel sound
in conscience to have Glenstal so staffed that
I shall be free for the administrative work of
M.M.M. & in the position I hold at Glenstal.
I also see the great advantage my position offers
me at Glenstal where I shall be trying to live
& learning to deal in all these questions of
government & administration from the Religions
spirit & attitude, a thing I have had no
practical experience in. I have had novitiate
after novitiate in the hidden life of manual
work since I gave God my life. Now I must
become more generous, giving myself in a way I
find hardest, shoulder the cross bravely although
I am absolutely incapable, I trust for also lately

and see in Glenstal for my own formation under your direction, a wonderful opportunity under exceptional privileges and favourable circumstances of being trained in all these matters, Lat. Whether I shall do justice for Glenstal is The Question, I keep asking myself. Certainly conditions are more favourable now &
you will have such a good knowledge of
everything it will really take little of your
time to express your wishes to me once or
twice a week & then for me to carry them
out accordingly. I still hope it is practical
to continue the two Lat such a decision rest with you -
I also enclose items of Clereys bill & marked with & the things I got for the College etc. Things marked M were for our use in sitting-room. I enclose also a cheque of balance for Laundry bills - Hope this is all in order & that you will be able to understand.
I am sorry this missed the post to-day Lat could not get to finish it till too late for post - I hope it will not weary you, it is well you have a whole month to read it. "

              [Postscript Ends]
He is showing a very sense and paternal interest in M.M.M. - as soon as I am able he wishes to see me and discuss possibilities of being directly under P. de Fiole - & one relationship at present with the Lec. Lere
Pray much for me–I never forget you all–

I am still confined to bed & have to
Leave the mysteries again for lip toe, it is
not healed yet. It will be cured in God’s

Miss Leyden did not come here, so I

After this few days of prayer, reflection &

FEAST OF THE HOLY ROSARY 1936

              My dear Father Prior,

Many thanks for your very welcome letter received this morning from Downside. I am very pleased to hear you had such a cordial welcome and that the place impressed you so much.

It is encouraging to see what the good will of men can accomplish when cooperating with God's Adorable Will strengthened by His Grace. I am sure they had just as many difficulties as you have now, when they started. We must both go faithfully ahead each in our different works faithfully corresponding to divine grace, cutting out everything that stands in the way of accomplishing such a tremendous work as foundation. It absorbs all that is in us poor limited human beings and if we allow our energy and time to be frustrated elsewhere God's work for us will suffer. How much I saw this during my last seven months at Glenstal and the difficulty to make a break from what I loved and appreciated so much.

Do you mean me to do anything with Briscoe Lawlor in reference to the curb?

When you are back and settled down I shall be glad to hear from you how you think the staff are getting on; the reports from my Daughters [are] not too bright. I foresee... do not let things get out of hand as it would be serious for anything to happen this year. Has Miss Hayes said anything further to you? I fear Mai with all her goodness is not all we would require as I fear she is the cause of the grumbling. Also I fear Nora will not be able for the work, she is very young and soft.

I fear Mr Egan is not finished completely yet although Fr Whitney is bringing his priests and students into it to-day. But you will see something of it. Desmond is very anxious to meet you some time; now that you have been to Downside I have promised him a visit in the Xmas holidays, when we shall all see you I hope.

I hope you found all well on your return. Has Fr Milerton turned up? I hear he is in Ireland again. I hope you will hear from Mr French [ffrench] of Galway; I spoke of Glenstal for His Boys, and gave a prospectus.

I called at several places about stove for class-room; there are none of the stoves set in large enough in capacity of heat for the room so I send you down illustration of the "Romesse" etc. They suggest if you could find [the] second flue in the room to have a stove at each end of the room, as I showed you in the previous illustration. I await your instruction before going any further.

In union of prayer and love in the hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Your ever grateful child for God,

              Dear Father Prior
              How am I to thank
you for saying Mass for me

              • also asking +- Davidx
this gift is infinite oh if
I were only worthy ff all the
love + generosity you all have
                shown me since I went
                to Glenstal. Allowing me
to help in a very small
                way in Glenstal I always
                regard as a very great
privilege + now to be allowed
                in Gods loving Providence to
suffer a little with Him for
His Fathers Glory leaves me in
                a greater ditth thanever. I
                may honestly, say there is
                absolutely no reason for you
                to feel any remorse if
there could be any fault it is
all on my side but really
I believed it is all in Gods
                plan for my sanctification
His future Work + s think
also for Glenstal in a more
                perhaps humble + hidden
                way
                All I regret is the
                inconvenience + extra work
I have been the cause of
                laying on your shoulders +
                for leaving
                things in such
                disorder
I feel very much for you
                with your further cross +
                anxiety over Rose I shall
                pray much for hhr quick
I fear Mr O' Reilty will be
                disappointed these things cannot
be helped + I thank you
                very much for all the
                trouble you have taken
I asked my brother to telephone
at once as S. O' Reilly
                called in yesterday hoping
                to meet Dom David who
                would perhaps have good
news for them_ I am very
sorry it did not suit your
niece as it is a lovely
                home + a real catholic
                family.
                I sucerely hope

                come a terrible natural

              MONKSTOWN
              My dear i. Prior
              To-day we sing the grand
              Te Deum in thanksgiving
              to
God for all the graces +
blessings of the old year my
praises go up to God thanking
              Him for every thing especially
for the graces I received at
              Glenstal + during
              my illness
              they were precious beyond
words next year I hope for as
all they will be even richer
even if it Means more toes .
I was very very pleased to see
Lizzie looking so well + happy
              she too has greatly
              improved
              .
              . she is
really happy at Glenstal + wants
to do her hest to please you all
I have written to Miss Leyden
to return to you on the 7 Jan.
if you would prefere her to
              have a companion It could
              send perhaps Miss Moynagh
or Miss O' Rourke till I am
able to go down myself. If
              you would like this arrangement
then the work should be devided
              they should have regular time
for prayer + if it were possible
to have instruction on the religious
life say once every two weeks
as well as the general instruction
              to the maids
              They should be able
if there were two to undertake the
              Fathers mending. Owing to financia
              circumstances
would have to ask you MONKSTOWN
to give them their full keep laundry
etc. I think Dom Gerard arranged
with Fr. John that M.M.M. travelling
expenses were paid, he will be
able to tell you, it was
              so but
I always tried to do all I
could as long as I was in
The position to do so as I
feel we would be more than
repaid for the little we could
do for Glenstal in the spiritual
              formation we would receive

              • the privilege
                being
                in
                a religious atmosphere.
Now I am faced with all
                the sure signs + blessing
                a work
That is really Gods To be successful
                at must live +
                practise all the
                characteris tie of far
                Divine Lords Life. One
of the great blessings of last
year is M.M.M. starts in real
                this
                poverty like the spirit o
                holy Season

Wee are doing all we can in
a quiet way up here to collect
enough friends to pay the fees,
                for the nursing training
Please let me know what you
                two were going I would
                prefere_ I
like if possible that they had
instructions on the vows as I
think for the first few years
we shall have to remain as
                secular with private vows
                practising the works we propose
                to undertake eventually as religious
I await my return or your will

As for Miss Hayes T.G. she
