Scope and content
Letter from Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap., Bishop’s Residence, Baker City, Oregon, to Fr. Peter Bowe OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, reporting on his meeting with Bishop Charles Joseph O’Rielly. He writes ‘His lordship seemed quite under a mistaken idea about our coming & had everything planned for our final settlement here. This morning the architect called with plans & specifications for our approval — a combined house & chapel to be started right away and we approved the plans. His lordship’s idea that I should anchor down & build up the chapel & gather what Catholics there might be about the place, whilst [Father] Thomas [Dowling] would be around preaching missions and so gather in the funds’.
