Note
Donal McHales (or Domhnall Hales) styled himself as the Irish Republic’s Consul in Italy from 1919 to 1923. Hales was born in Ballinadee, County Cork, and he and his brothers Seán, Tom and Robert, fought in the War of Independence. Seán Hales was later killed during the Civil War. Donal Hales was appointed Irish Consular and Commercial Agent for Italy by Dail Éireann in August 1919. Unlike his brother, Seán, Donal McHales appears to have taken the Anti-Treaty side during the Civil War and he subsequently lost his diplomatic position in Italy.
