Scope and content
Copies and extracts of documents outlining the administrative steps behind the 1911 foundation of the Irish Capuchin Franciscans in Roseburg, Oregon. The first page acts as an archival inventory index, referencing original letters held in the Provincial Archives in Dublin. It records a 19 July 1911 official invitation from Archbishop Christie of Oregon requesting the Irish friars to take charge of the parish, followed by a 17 August 1911 acceptance letter from Father Thomas Dowling OFM Cap. (Provincial Minister), subject to approval from Rome. Includes a formal typewritten Latin decree titled ‘Erectio Canonica Domus’ from the Sacra Congregatio De Religiosis in Rome, dated 5 May 1913, which officially establishes the canonical house and is signed by Father Pacificus a Sejano OFM Cap. A handwritten archival note added at the bottom by Father Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap. on 24 November 1936, certifies that all listed documents and letters are securely preserved within the Archives of the Irish Capuchin Province.
