Scope and content

Ledger entry containing three chronicle entries and two pasted newspaper clippings documenting ecclesiastical, academic, and missionary milestones of the Cork Capuchin community from August to October 1909. The upper section features a comprehensive newspaper clipping titled ‘Holy Trinity Church — American Bishop's Visit — Consecration of Altars’, which describes a ceremony conducted by Most Rev. Charles Joseph O’Reilly, Bishop of Oregon, consecrating three new marble altars dedicated to the Father Mathew Memorial Church, assisted by friars including Very Rev. Fr. Kevin, Guardian, and Rev. Fr. Jarlath.

Two flanking handwritten entries note that Rev. Fr. Alphonsus was transferred from his studies in Kilkenny to Rochestown just prior to his ordination at this ceremony, which was preceded by a formal visit to the monastery by Bishop O’Reilly. The lower section includes a printed press notice announcing that Father Edwin, O.S.F.C., B.A., Ph.D. (an alumnus of the University of Louvain), has been appointed to the Chair of Philosophy at University College Cork, detailing his extensive credentials in mental and moral science. The final handwritten entry records the brief stay of Rev. Fathers Giles and Simon from the Province of Paris, who resided in Rochestown from 28 September to 14 October 1909, to learn English in preparation for their assignment to the Indian Mission.
