Scope and content

Correspondence between +O’Hara and +McQuaid on the proposal to hold a commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the death of Mgr. Giovanni Rinucinni, the first Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland. Mgr. Tardini, Pro Secretary of State to His Holy Father had informed the Nuncio that the Pope wishes that it be a solemn commemoration and any references to the first Nuncio’s mission and materials he brought to Ireland, namely guns and ammunition, should be avoided. He hopes therefore that a mass will be held at the Pro Cathedral followed by a public conference at the Aula Maxima of the National University. The latter should be restricted to one or tow addresses. The Archbishop agrees and suggests that the Nuncio give the sermon at the Mass. He feels it would be better to hold the Mass at 11am on the Monday or Tuesday as the 13th, the actual death date of Rinucinni, falls on a Sunday.
