The Committee is of the opinion that Scientology, at worst, this is a money-making agency and is not a serious threat. A report from Mr. Byrne was read concerning the importation of a cargo of paperback books, valued at £2,000, by Prescott. He applied for membership of Mrs Stanley’s Organisation governing the distribution of books, but was refused. Priest in charge of the CIE Sodality, Merchants’ Quay, to be contacted regarding O’Riordan and the CIE elections.

Handwritten statement, marked ‘secret’, dealing with the methodology which should be used by the ‘V’ Committee. The purpose of the Committee is to counter subversives who may attack the doctrine or influence of the Church. In Dublin the chief subversive movements are anti-clerical liberalism. Communism seeks to overthrow the social system by revolution. Six steps for action are outlined. The following are some of the activities which have come to notice since May 1954: The Peoples’ College, Irish Housewives Association, the influence of Michael O’Riordan in his trade-union, Dublin dance-halls and immoral dances, The Unemployed Self-Help Association. The Guild of St. Francis de Sales for journalists, Bamba books, the IRA, information on leading Communists, Irish Workers’ League, National Co-operative Council, Radio-Telefis Eireann, the College of Scientology, the Anti-Nuclear Movement, Desmond Brannigan, Czechs in Dublin motor business, Formation of ICTU. It must be understood that this is the only agency for anti- subversive action and must forage for itself. Six suggested remedies given.

Local clergy to be notified of these discretely, unless Protestants. Fr. Crean reported that nothing was known of a man named Wyse by Intelligence. Mr. Kelly of Fianna Eireann was described as odd. Joseph Deasy and Mick Riordan visited Prague. As a result they are plugging the line ‘Socialism for Ireland’.

The police are investigating the Centre of Psychiatry/Scientology arising out of an inquest on one of the pupils. O’Riordan has not left the country. Roger McHugh is a practicing Catholic, but quite odd and silly. Matt Merrigan used his union influence to ground Aer Lingus planes in England during the recent strike. Cathal O’Shannon was a Socialist but now a practicing Catholic.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The following items are mentioned in the report: the IWL meeting on 24 November 1955 when Michael O’Riordan lectured on ‘Left-Wing Communism’. He traced Communism from its inception, deals with its influence on outstanding historical events and its growing strength in China, India and in the Arab nations. He mentioned its influence on the Trade Union organization in USA and Britain. The report also deals with the Christmas Bazaar, the difficulty of obtaining a hall for the Peace Campaign meeting, the People’s College Adult Education Association Week-end in Bray, and the date for a meeting of the Irish Pacifist Movement.
