Hughes, Browne & Nolan and Patrick Dargan regarding the translation into English the German book Bekenntnis Zur Katholischen Kirche (Conversion to the Catholic Church). The book consists of four essays written by four German Protestant married ministers who were received into the Church. The issue is whether it is appropriate at this time to translate this work into English in either England or Ireland. No. 1955

Letter from Fr. Patrick Hamell to +McQuaid informing him that he is publishing a book on the sermons which have appeared in the I.E.R. He is now seeking permission to include the Archbishop’s article on St. Vincent de Paul.

Handwritten report saying that the aim of the a private meeting in Jury’s, Peadar O’Donnell presiding, was to get sports’ bodies to send delegates to festival in Moscow. Unusual to hear O’Donnell praise Patrick Kavanagh. Nasty rumours about the moral circumstances in which Kavanagh went to America. Asks if he has read Fr. Harley’s wild statement – a great encouragement to Communists.

Typed letter from J.A. Nugent, Chairman, to +McQuaid inviting him to a Gala Performance of the Pageant of St. Patrick, which will be the inauguration of An Tostal 1955. Annotation by +McQuaid.

Note saying that Mr. John of the Capitol Theatre wished a priest should see Hill No. 1 and passed by the Ecclesiastical Censor. Annotation by +McQuaid saying he regrets that the film was shown contrary to diocesan regulations. Suggests that a statement by letter be received from the Theatre. Patrick Farrell of the Theatre said that if the demand for the writing of a letter was a disciplinary action he would not submit to it.

Sekiya, Secretary of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in Japan, is to speak at the home of Mr. Alfred Bewley under the auspices of the Dublin Society of Friends’ Peace Council and the Irish Pacifist Movement. A small Left -Wing Labour group has been started by Matthew Merrigan and John Byrne. Its policy is anti-coalition.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The following items are mentioned in the report: Patrick Carmody gave an illustrated lecture on Sean O’Casey. ‘Buster’ McCabe arrived from Belfast. Peadar O’Donnell spoke on ‘The Irish in Britain’, saying that English Catholics were antagonistic towards Irish émigrés. Tommy O’Reilly (a retired ITGWU official) said that “150 unemployed from each side of the city should purchase food and having no money to pay would be jailed. This would bring matters to a head.”

Report on the Irish Workers’ League. General feeling is that the League is losing ground. At their meeting at Mansfield Corner their speakers were attacked, so the League has gone underground. Last summer it held camps at Dundalk, Skerries and Killybegs. Excursion to Enniskerry ended with a drunken orgy. Links between the IWL and the ‘folk university’.
