Letter from Fr. Stephen Murtagh OFM Cap. to Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap. enclosing a copy of a letter from Timothy Manning, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. Father Stephen notes that the question of using Santa Inés is settled ‘so long as Archbishop McIntyre administers the Archdiocese’. The Archdiocese argued that a major building program by the Capuchins would constitute a ‘de facto alienation’ of the Mission, which the Archdiocese was unwilling to permit. Father Stephen proposes McKenzie Bridge, Oregon, as the second choice for a novitiate. He reports that Fr. Fintan, who was in charge at McKenzie Bridge, suffered a serious heart attack while cutting grass. He attributes this to overwork, as Father Fintan lived alone and performed all manual labor himself.
