Scope and content

Letter from Fr. Stephen Murtagh OFM Cap. to Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, reporting that the Archbishop of Los Angeles (James Francis McIntyre) has refused to allow religious orders to recruit for vocations within the schools of the archdiocese. At the time, the friary had only six boarding students and one day student. The letter details a meeting with the Archbishop regarding the Santa Inés Mission. Father Stephen expresses doubt that the order will be able to hold onto it, noting the Archbishop’s ‘abhorrence’ toward religious orders having foundations that might be exempt from his direct authority.
