Letter from Fr. Peter Bowe OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, to Fr. Brendan O’Callaghan OFM Cap. announcing that by arrangement with the English Provincial (Fr. Cuthbert Hess) and Rome, a group of English friars led by Fr. Nicholas is sailing for New York on 3 November. They will report to the Irish house at Abbottstown, Pennsylvania. Father Peter has secured a formal agreement from the English Provincial that their friars will not take on missions in Pennsylvania or any other district the Irish Province intends to reserve for its own work. He requests that Fr. Brendan warn younger Irish friars to be circumspect in their speech. He notes that ‘American Prelates’ have taken offense at criticisms made by visiting clergy, and emphasizes that ‘America is big enough and broad enough’ for everyone if small, hindering behaviours are avoided.
