The Vincentians were founded in France in 1625 by Vincent de Paul, where they are known as Les Lazaristes.
After a few failed attempts to found a branch of the Vincentians in Ireland, it was finally successful in 1833 through the efforts of four student of Maynooth College: James Lynch, Peter Kenrick, Anthony Reynolds and Michael Burke. They were guided by Fathers Philip Dowley and John McCann, and soon after joined by Father Thomas MacNamara.
The Irish Province was officially founded in 1848.
