Newspaper clippings relating to the Irish Revolution assembled by the editors of 'The Capuchin Annual'. Many of the clippings relate to the role played by the Catholic clergy (particularly the Irish Capuchins) during this period. The file includes:

• ‘Salute the Heroes / Back from the Gates of Death’. The article refers to the release of republican prisoners from Mountjoy Jail and to the roles played by Fr. Augustine Hayden OFM Cap. and Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. The article reads ‘The association of these two much loved Irish Franciscan Friars with the last moments of some of the men who died after the Insurrection of 1916 was recalled by their presence yesterday. … Father Augustine appealed to the crowds whom his voice could reach to be calm. Newspaper clipping from the 'Evening Echo', 11 May 1966, commemorating the links between the Capuchin College at Rochestown in County Cork and republican leaders. Includes a large portrait photograph of Fr. Augustine Hayden OFM Cap., ‘one of the first five pupils with whom the college began in 1884 – [he] became rector in 1896 and held that position for almost fourteen years. He was fearless and inspiring in his priestly ministry to the fighting men in Dublin, Easter 1916’. Pasted onto black card.

The cutting refers to the performance of the juvenile pantomime in the Hall attended by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Cork and by Fr. Pius Duggan OSFC, guardian, Rochestown Capuchin Friary.

Newspaper cuttings covering the collapse of two tenement buildings at No. 66 and No. 67 Church Street on 2 Sept. 1913. The reports provide descriptions of the disaster and the subsequent funeral of the seven victims at St Michan’s Church, Halston Street. Some of the photographic prints show the attendance of Capuchin friars at the funerals including Fr. Jarlath Hynes OSFC, Fr. Paul Neary OSFC, Fr. John Butler OSFC and Fr. Thomas Dowling OSFC. The file includes cuttings from the 'Evening Telegraph', 'Irish Independent', 'Daily Sketch', and 'Freeman’s Journal'.
