This series includes various books and journals of account (for example, ledgers of accounts payable, accounts received and cash receipts). The records detail annual audits and routine household and community expenditure. The series also includes records relating to tax returns and bills (property and municipal rates), and insurance policies covering fire, engineering, and public liabilities. Accounts of monies derived from street collections and annual quests are also included in this section.

Letters from [Madge Auld?], St. Andrew’s, Queen’s Crescent, Southsea, Hampshire, to Fr. Seraphin Van Damme OSFC (1820-1887), referring to a sum of £300 left in trust with Fr. Laurence O’Dea OSFC ‘to build a chapel [in Kilkenny] where the Third Order Sisters would meet and masses be said for me and mine’. An annotation notes that these letters were from the ‘late Mrs Sullivan of Lacken, Kilkenny’.

Letter re the temperance movement in Kilkenny

Letter from an anonymous correspondent to the guardian, Capuchin Friary, Walkin Street, on the need to for the re-organisation of the temperance movement in Kilkenny. The correspondent refers to a newspaper article written by him in 1904 (clipping enclosed) in which he calls for the establishment by the Capuchins of a Boys Brigade club in the city.

Mark MacDonnell OSFC, regarding negotiations with local banks in Kilkenny over a loan and the reduction of a debt on the Friary. Loughlin also refers to ‘the loss I sustained in the failure of the "contract" of the new church not being carried out’. He also refers to his life and conditions in Australia.

The entries are listed under the headings of date of marriage, name and surname, age, condition (bachelor or spinster), profession, place of residence, father’s name and profession of father. Reference is also made to the registry district where the marriage service took place.

Sermon preacher lists

Orders and lists of mass sermons preached by priests at the Church of St. Francis, Kilkenny. The entries are listed under date (usually at Lent, Easter and other religious feast days) and the name of the celebrant. It is noted in the 1903 list that the maximum duration of sermons at mass is twenty minutes. One of the lists is titled ‘Lenten discourses’.

Community Correspondence

The subseries contains letters to Capuchin friars in Kilkenny concerning missions, retreats, the appointment of confessors and notices of jubilees, anniversaries and deaths. Many of the letters are from the Provincial Minster to the guardians of the Friary and relate to the internal administration of the Order. The section includes a large register book (CA KK/1/3/1) which contains copies of numerous circular letters and memoranda from Ministers General and Provincial Ministers.
