The section includes photographic images of both the old Ard Mhuire Friary (formerly Ards House, the seat of the Stewart-Bam family) and the present-day Friary and House of Studies (now a retreat and conference centre) built on the same site in the 1960s. There are also images of Capuchin friars who resided at Ard Mhuire and prints of the surrounding towns, scenic landscapes and sites of historical and religious significance.
This subseries includes a very large collection of photographic albums and prints that capture Irish Capuchin missionary activity in Zambia from the commencement of work in what was then Northern Rhodesia in 1931. The photographs can be used to reconstruct missionaries’ actions, trace the evolution of their work and their interactions with local inhabitants, and assess their impact as agents of western contact with African society. The photographic archive also offers an insight into indigenous political, social, and economic history in the areas where the Capuchin missionaries were active.
This section comprises a collection of photographic images held in the Archives of the Capuchin Custody in Zambia. The Irish Capuchin Archives holds digitized (TIFF) copies of these images. The copies were created by Fr. Noel Brennan OFM Cap. for curation by the Irish Capuchin Archives.
Proofs for the photographic sections in 'The Capuchin Annual' (1936) and 'The Capuchin Annual' (1942). The photographic proofs are copy images, manuscripts and letters relating to the 1916 Rising and the later revolutionary period. Photographic prints of the repatriation and reburial of the bodies of Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. and Fr. Dominic O’Connor in the cemetery of Rochestown Capuchin Friary, County Cork. Includes photographs of the arrival of the coffins at Shannon Airport. Other prints show the coffins at the High Altar in Holy Trinity Church, Cork, where a special Solemn Mass was celebrated. Some of the photographs show An Taoiseach Éamon de Valera, President Seán T. O’Kelly and Jack Lynch attending the ceremonies. Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. and Fr. Dominic O'Connor OFM Cap. were laid to rest in a burial ceremony on 14 June 1958. The funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Hilary McDonagh OFM Cap., Vicar Provincial, and the coffins were laid side by side adjacent to the grave of Fr. Augustine Hayden OFM Cap.
