It appears that the IWL is to focus on two main channels – the question of Partition and Emigration. By using this approach it is hoped to bring League activities to the notice of application by Carrie Wine (Mrs. Justin Keating) for an Irish passport. various bodies and individuals. Greaves has just published a pamphlet titled ‘The Irish Case Against Partition’. The meeting on the 9th October focused on O’Riordan’s forthcoming lecture, ‘Labour’s Way Forward’, and the preparation of a draft educational programme which is to conform, as far as possible, with that of the British Communist Party. O’Riordan’s talk stresses that An Taoiseach’s economic measures should be immediately abandoned as they are causing widespread unemployment.
Typed report on CPI and KO. At the Executive meeting of 30th October Sean Nolan expressed disappointment at the poor attendance League members at their shows. Jeffares referred to apathy regarding supporting League functions. Sean Mulready said that the League had a sound educational programme for the winter period. At a general meeting on 1st November the political situation in Poland and Hungary was addressed by Sam Nolan. “It is clear that the Communist Party ……in these countries are getting rid of the evils and errors of the Stalin regime”.
Typed circular letter/questionnaire sent to those who have shown interest in this “progressive and radical” newspaper, which will deal with social and political matters.

At the Executive meeting of IWL on 6 November the advisability of concealing the League’s “direction from the Communist Headquarters in London” discussed. This accusation was being hurled at members. The meeting scheduled for 8 November cancelled due to a march by 1,200 students banners read “Soviet Murder of Hungary” windows of New Books broken to chants of “burn it down”. Catholic confraternities in CIE urged their fellow workers not to work with Mick O’Riordan. Matt Merrigan says he is a Social Democrat and not a Communist.

Letter in response to Workers’ Union of Ireland demanding that the employees of traders compel them to join a trade union. Otherwise dockers would ensure that no fruit trader’s vehicles be loaded at the docks.

No Executive meeting of IWL on 29 January 1957 to allow members to attend the 10th Anniversary commemoration of the death of Jim Larkin. Ceremony presided over by Brendan Corish, T.D., Minister for Social Welfare. R. M. Fox, author of ‘Jim Larkin, the Rise of the Underman’, spoke. At the IWL meeting on 4 February Sam Nolan spoke on the effect of recent international events on world Communism. Dublin unemployed discussed. Left-Wing Labour expected to meet regarding the line of action for the forthcoming election. Dublin Trades’ Council and the Council of Irish Unions to meet and arrange action for unemployed. Mass demonstration outside Employment Exchange planned for Sunday, 10 February.

On 13 February meeting discussed amount of support it could give. Money for fee not an issue will supply transport members will canvas house-to house.
