Total Abstinence Society of Ireland Medals

Face (front): Profile view of the head of Fr. Mathew. Along outer edge: ‘The Father Mathew OSFC Total Abstinence Association’.
Obverse: Cruciform formula of pledge: ‘From the / Great Glory of God/ and the/ Salvation / of souls / in honour of / the sacred thirst and agony of Jesus / and the sorrowful Heart of Mary / I promise / to abstain from all / intoxicating drinks during / my life / and thus / discourage / their use / in others’.
Images in the four corners of the cross, clockwise, beginning with upper left: Heart surmounted by cross, entwined by crown of thorns, with drops of blood, Heart a fire pierced by sword, with drops of blood; harp; 3 shamrocks.
Two of the medals have green ribbon and pin attachments.

Total Abstinence Society Pledge Cards

The sub-series contains a collection of original Total Abstinence Society pledge cards. Most of the cards are signed by the pledge-taker and by Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC. The cards were decorated with various temperance symbols and vignettes. An illustration on one side of the cards depicted a scene warning of the dangers of intemperance – a man driven by alcohol to beat his wife. Another illustration showed a scene of temperance – a happy family reading together by the hearth. The cards are listed in chronological order.

A collection of records mostly relating to the Temperance Sodality of the Sacred Thirst attached to St. Mary of the Angels, Capuchin Friary, Church Street, Dublin.

Trace map of premises on Walkin Street

Trace map of premises to be conveyed by Rev. Andrew Craig Robinson to Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC and others. The property is divided into sixteen individual lots and is demarcated on the map by a red line. An annotation reads: ‘The red lines indicate the boundaries of the property of Rev. A.C. Robinson and W. R. Robinson’. The premises are bounded to the west by the Friary garden and yard and by the alms house.

Trace map and plan of grounds of adjoining St. Mary of the Angels and the Capuchin Friary, Church Street. The map divides the grounds into lots showing the endorsed names of landlords including More O’Ferrall, J. Cunningham and O’Brady. ‘Thunder’s Court’ and ‘Willis Court Yard’ are also marked on the plan. With a cover envelope addressed to Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. endorsed: ‘What head rents do you pay and to whom? Name of solicitors?’

File relating to temperance meetings and demonstrations organised by various trade and workingmen’s associations in Dublin. Includes handbills, fliers for meetings held in Father Mathew Hall, Church Street, Dublin, and letters to Fr. Aloysius Travers OSFC from the Operative Plasters’ Society, the Painters’ Trade Union and the Irish National Foresters’ Benefit Society. With a complete copy of 'The Drapers’ Assistant, the Official Journal of the Irish Drapers’ Assistants’ Benefit and Protective Association', IV, no. 2 (May 1906).
