Temperance Badges

Listing of temperance badges circulated from September 1906 to 9 April 1914. The listing distinguishes between life and time-limited badges and those awarded to children. The total number of badges is noted as 1,039,149.

Mission and Retreat Lists

Notebook compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC detailing the missions and retreats given by him and other Capuchin friars from c.1903-08. The opening page notes that he was ordained on 23 Feb. 1902. An index is extant at the start of the volume. Information is given in respect of the location of the retreat or mission, the date, and the number of confessions heard and sermons preached. Occasional reference is made the subject of sermons and lectures such as ‘charity’, ‘the mercy of God’, and the 'dangers of drink’. The file also includes a separate typescript listing of missions, retreats and special sermons given by Fr. Angelus from 1903-40.

List of Temperance Missions

Listing compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC of the dates of temperance missions and the numbers taking the pledge in various parishes including Ballinrobe, Westport, Louisburgh, Clare Island, Clonmel and Kells. Remarks are also included in relation to the existence of a temperance hall and the names of the Capuchin friars involved in the mission.

Membership Records of the League of Young Irish Crusaders

A membership volume associated with the League of Young Irish Crusaders. Lists of promoters of the League are given on the opening pages of the volume. The promoters are mainly drawn from Counties Dublin, Tyrone, Longford, Fermanagh, Roscommon and Wicklow. The membership entries are listed alphabetically under surname, address and age. The membership of the Crusaders was confined to children and young adults who promised to abstain from taking an intoxicating drink. Members were expected to join the Father Mathew Total Association and to become members of a local Sacred Thirst Sodality. A good number of pages in the volume remain blank.

Pledge-Takers in Ennis, County Clare

File containing records of pledges (taken for life and for one year) taken by individuals residing in Ennis, County Clare. The names of the individuals and their places of residence are given. Some of the lists are compiled in copybooks and are titled: ‘The Young Irish Crusaders, Christian Schools, Ennis’; ‘St Joseph’s School, Convent of Mercy, Ennis’, ‘Ennis Boys’ School’, ‘Boarding School, Pledges for Life’.

Pledge-Takers in Limerick

List of approximately two and half thousand names and addresses of those who took the total abstinence pledge for life at a mission given by the Capuchin friars at St. Joseph’s Church, Limerick, in Autumn 1910. The date given on the title page is 18 Sept. 1910.

Lists of pledge-takers in the parish of Schull in County Cork. The lists include those who took the pledge under the parish priest, Fr. John O’Connor. The second list identifies those who took the pledge for life or for one year, and the names of the Young Irish Crusaders.
