Overseas Missions: Bechuanaland ( Botswana ): copy letter from Fergus Loughry, C.P., to the Mission Secretary General, Caspar Caulfield, C.P. While on a visit to Botswana in January 1958, the Apostolic Delegate mentioned that he was now of the opinion that the Bechuanaland Protectorate, as it stood, would be best for the Passionists and that Mafeking or any other district beyond the borders need not be included. The new Prefecture Apostolic would be known as the Prefecture of Bechuanaland. He asked for the nomination of a suitable priest for the office, but Fergus declined to do so as it probably was a matter for the General Curia. Fergus thinks the Secretary General could confidently proceed to prepare the map of Bechuanaland. He wil also see what he can obtain concerning the history of Bechuanaland for the Secretary General. THIS ITEM IS INCLUDED AT A3 OF THE DOCUMENT "OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE RE SETTING UP OF HOUSE IN TRANSVAAL" LOCATED AT 8-1-4-1 SERIAL NO 6821)

Overseas Missions: Durban; Carletonville: Botswana: photocopy of letter from the Mission Secretary General Caspar Caulfield, C.P., to the Provincial, Fr. Fergus Loughrey, C.P. Archbishop Hurley has indicated his willingness for a Religious House and public church in Durban and Bishop Boyle his willingness to accept the Passionists in Carltonville. Progress on both these matters due to Propaganda's intervention, Possible problem to know which set of transactios to conclude first. Evidence that Hurley is corresponding directly with Propaganda, while Boyle has submitted a carefully documented reply directly to the Cardinal Prefect on the question of admitting the Passionists directly to Johannesburg, The Secretary General then goes on to give a lengthy account of Boyle's letter. (A copy of this letter was later obtained by the Secretary General and forwarded to Fergus on 13-08-1958 (see 8-1-4-16 sewrial no 6829) NB THIS LETTER IS MENTIONED AT A5 IN DOCUMENT "CORRESPONDENCE RE SETTING UP OF HOUSE IN TRANSVAAL" LOCATED AT 8-1-4-1 SERIAL NO 6821.
