Fisherman, Gola Island, County Donegal

An image of a fisherman working on pots at the small harbour on Gola Island (‘Gabhla’) off the coast of Gweedore (‘Gaoth Dobhair’) in County Donegal. A manuscript annotation on the reverse of the print reads 'Hughie McSweeney / Gola Island, County Donegal, works at his pots under the protecting shrine of Our Lady which was erected during the Marian Year [1954]’.

Letter from Fr. Xavier Reardon OFM Cap. (1899-1986) to Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. enclosing photographs for use in an article on Capuchin missionaries in India. The letter is dated 22 Nov. 1954. The file includes the following images:

Funeral of Chief Superintendent Seán Gantly, Church of the Immaculate Conception, Dublin

The funeral of Chief Superintendent Seán Gantly, head of the Garda Special Branch, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Merchants' Quay in Dublin on 23 January 1948. Gantly was leading a party of Gardai from the Detective Branch at Dublin Castle in a search for escaped prisoners at the Hammond Lane Foundry when he was accidentally shot.

Joseph Aloysius Lyons (1879-1939), Prime Minister of Australia, with Éamon de Valera, at Dún Laoghaire during the former's official visit to Ireland in June 1935.
