Bound Photographic and Document Volumes
IE CA CP/3/16 · Subserie · c.1847-1955
Parte de Irish Capuchin Archives

The subseries comprises a large collection of bound volumes containing photographic material, newspaper and magazine clippings, original historical records, and ephemera compiled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., the editor of ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The content of the volumes is extremely varied and, in many instances, includes rare original records reflecting Moynihan’s interest in Irish history, and particularly the revolutionary period. Some of the material listed here complements content published in ‘The Capuchin Annual’ with several original photographs extant in the volumes reproduced in various editions of the periodical.

Other content (especially the clippings) is suggestive of Moynihan’s eclectic interest in Irish church history, Irish Capuchin history, antiquities, Irish literature and art, Gaelic culture, historiography, and the contemporary political and economic situation in Ireland especially during the Second World War.

Parte de Irish Capuchin Archives

The subseries comprises a large collection of loose pamphlets, magazines, periodicals, and booklets assembled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., the editor of ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The broad subjects include the Home Rule crisis (1912-14), World War I (1914-18), the War of Independence (1919-21), and the Civil War (1922-23).

Other content in the pamphlet collection is indicative of Moynihan’s eclectic interest in Irish church history, Franciscan history, antiquities, Irish literature and art, Gaelic culture, historiography, and the contemporary political and economic situation in Ireland during his lifetime.

The subseries includes material relating to the publication titled ‘Dánta Dé / idir sean agus nuadh / Úna Ní Ógáin do bhailigh iad, idir focla agus fuinn, Riobard Ó Duibhir do chuir comhsheinm orgáin’ (Dublin: printed by Colm Ó Lochlainn at Comhartha na dTri Coinneal [Three Candles Press], 1928).

The book includes the text of old and new religious hymns in Irish. The words and music were collected by Úna Ní Ógaín and arranged for the organ by Robert O’Dwyer. Úna Ní Ógaín (Agnes Young) died before the hymnal was completed and it was published posthumously in 1928. Most of the lyrics are religious poems in the bardic tradition while others were seemingly derived from traditional songs and poems. The file includes numerous inserts which were originally placed in the volume. The inserts include clippings of reviews of the book along with many letters to Douglas Hyde commending the publication (Hyde had assisted Úna Ní Ógaín in the preparation of the text). The file also includes lists of subscribers, fliers, publicity material, and manuscript notes in Irish. Also includes a letter from William T. Cosgrave (Liam T. MacCosgair). Other correspondents with Hyde include Alice H. Henry (5 Sandford Terrace, Ranelagh, Dublin), Seoras Mac Aoidh (Perthshire), Lilian Russell (10 Selwood Place, London), Hilda Campbell (Elm Grove, Ockham, Ripley, Surrey), and Lily O’Connor (Carrigafoyle, 38 Arthur Road, Wimbledon Park, London).

Copies of the ‘Weekly Review of the German News Agency’ and a solitary copy of ‘Radio News from Italy’. Essentially Axis propaganda, these English-language news reviews were designed for overseas circulation in neutral or non-aligned countries (like Ireland). They were usually disseminated by German and Italian diplomatic missions abroad. The news sheets featured short articles on Axis victories and reports on the brutality of the Allied bombing campaign. The reviews aimed to justify the war and to cultivate support for the Axis regimes, particularly by focusing on the perceived necessity of defeating Soviet communism.
