Minute Book of the House Council

The minutes start with the first council meeting held at Saint Joseph's, Blackrock, on 19 September 1873. At this first meeting, it was decided what the order of day would be from 4am rising to 9pm lights extinguished. The order of day was to change more than once in future meetings. Many other things were also proposed and decided in meetings.

‘Minutes of the proceedings of the “Union”, St. Joseph’s, Blackrock. Established 22 Jul 1900 at S[aint] V[incent's] C[ollege] Castleknock, under the patronage of Blessed Francis Clet, CM. Vol.II.’ Summary of lectures and debates at a student literary and debating society.

Examples of lecture topics and motions for debate are: 'Socialism', 'Belgium', 'Babylonia', 'South African War', 'A Pilgrimage to Rome', 'Which is the more necessary for Ireland just now, Home Rule or a Catholic University?', 'The Religious Crisis in France' and 'Some objects of Astronomical interest at the present Day', among many others. Not all of these are present in this volume, as some seem to have been documented in another volume of meeting minutes.

‘Minutes of the Students Literary & Debating Society of St Joseph’s Blackrock, established March 5th 1922, at St Joseph’s, Blackrock, under the Patronage of Bl[essed] Francis Regis Clet CM.

Examples of motions debated are: 'Would total prohibition be beneficial to Ireland?', 'Whether is development along Industrial or along Agricultural lines the more suitable for Ireland?', 'Is nationalisation of manufactures desirable under an Irish government?' and 'Should Sunday Games be abolished?', among many other motions.
