1893004 Hubert Carruth The Holy Land McKeown, Michael McKeown, Margaret

Hubert Carruth, C.P., - this note book contains Hubert's diary, written mainly on the recto of 252 pages, of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land over the period September/November, 1907. For record purposes, howevr, the volume has been dated as of April, 1908, because Hubert added a final page of recollections on that date. On the final page, he mentions the purchase of 140 "magic lantern slides" in Jerusalem "illustrative of our whole tour in the East". A grand-nephew of Hubert's, Mr. Ml. McKeown, 127 Spring Hill, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, on a vist to Mount Argus in August, 1996, to research Hubert's life, informed us that these slides are now in the possession of Miss Margaret McKeown, The McNeill Fold, Carrick Fergus, Co. Antrim, a grand-niece of Hubert's

1852009 Paul Mary Pakenham 18891058 Joseph Smith Winchester College

Paul Mary Pakenham - Family Background: Letter from Herbert Chitty, Secretary Winchester College, to Fr. Joseph Smith ( see also 2/2/1-2). Asks if there is positive proof that Charles Reginald Pakenham (Fr.Paul Mary) was ever at Winchester? As his name is not on Register of Scholars (i.e, "on the foundation") he would have been a commoner. Commoner's register only starts with 1836 though an index of commoners from 1800-1836 was compiled in 1893 from the annual school rolls on which all the surnames of commoners was entered. Christian names were added later after careful enquiry from the families concerned. No C.R.P. appears, though the names of his brothers, Thomas Alexander and Henry Robert do appear. This would seem to indicate that Charles Reginald was never a pupil.

1852009 Paul Mary Pakenham 1891058 Joseph Smith Winchester College

Paul Mary Pakenham - Family Background: Post card from Herbert Chitty, Secretary Winchester College, to Joseph Smith in reply to a letter of 23/08/1909 from Joseph, contents of which are not available, but which can be ascertained from further letter from Chitty (see 2/2/1/5). Joseph informed that Chitty will make careful enquiry into the matter next month and let Joseph know the result.

1852009 Paul Mary Pakenham 1891058 Joseph Smith 1854007 Laurence Carr 1877010 Patrick Fagan

Paul Mary Pakenham - The Passionist: letter from Patrick Fagan conveying answers from Laurence Carr to further queries from Joseph Smith. Paul Mary was not of a hard disposition - not a martinet: disposed of all his goods before entering - came "as a pauper": fervent during celebration of Mass and charitable to the people. On verso p.3 there are short notes in Joseph's handwriting re Paul Mary's mortifications, his drill-walking of novices and his talent for sketching.

1852009 Paul Mary Pakenham 1891058 Jospeh Smith Winchester College

Paul Mary Pakenham - Family Background: Letter from Herbert Chitty, Secretary Winchester College, in reply to previous correspondence from Joseph (see particularly 2/2/1/4 and 2/2/1/3). Chitty has followed up previous enquiries regarding the question of C.R. P's ( Paul Mary's) having been a pupil at Winchester, particularly the possibility that Thomas Alexander Pakenham whose name appears on the Commoner's register might have been mistaken for Charles Reginald. Chitty satisfied that this could not have happened as Thomas Alexander's name appears on the MS address book of those attending the annual Wyckehamist (name given to those who had been pupils) dinner from 1860/1890. He also states that the "Italian 'life' of C.R.P., that Joseph had mentioned is in the "regions of romance" as neither Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar nor the Earl of March was an alumnus of Winchester College. Copy of this "Italian Life!" is located at 2/2/7/29.
