ROUGH TRANSCRIPTION

Your Excellency.
The prolonged silence of the Bishop here was a clear
Sign that he could not see his way to accede to Miss Martin's request.
I could not write you a definite answer for Miss Martin without apprcach-
ing his Loddship on the matter. The following is the reply he gives her.-
I. That a Diccesan religious Society starts without any Episcopal approvab
that it starts to meet some Diocesan need, that it works under super-
vision. that aoproval follows.

  1. That a religious institute which would have as its principal or lead-
purpose, The Maternity training of Nuns would, at present, offend the
    mentality of the people.
  2. That the most pressing need in Cork. from the Missicnary point of viem
is an anlargement of the building of the African Sisters, and a better
provision for the education, both literary and medical,- including
maternity, but so that the maternity training should not be two
    empharised before the public.
I would have replied soener but I had to wait the pportun.
ity of m eting his Lordship.
    Mith Kindest regards,
    I remain
    Your Excellexcys' respectful servanb
    Fr. Domiic O. F. M.
    ST. FRANCIS.
