Typed report of the Vigilance Committee meeting held at 14, Gardiner Place. The following items are mentioned in the report: Fr. MacMahon explained the idea of forming a Guild for journalists modelled on the Guild of St. Francis de Sales in England. He advised that a different name be used instead of ‘guild’ as this is already used by a trade union. Have representatives from all newspapers. He thought it best to have journalists petition + McQuaid for permission to set up an association clarifying specific objects in advance. Fr. Fehily read a letter from the editor of The Standard who is interested in promoting the interests of the Church and co-operating with + McQuaid. He felt handicapped at times by not having somebody to seek guidance from with certain problems. Letter was read from Basil Clancy regarding the celebration of May Day in a Catholic way. Leo Crawford said there could be no question of any celebration at present as it would be provocative. Report from Mr. Gallagher stated that there are two halls where undesirable dancing was held, the Ballerina on the North side and Palm Court on the South side. Committee agreed it was good to keep them localised and not spread all over the city. The Corporation’s regulations governing such dances were to be checked.
