Scope and content

Copy letter from Fr. Zephyrin Engelhardt OFM to Fr. Stephen Murtagh OFM Cap. explicitly declining him permission to enter his workshop, citing what he perceives as ‘insulting’ and ‘studiously offensive’ behaviour from the Father Murtagh and his fellow friars. He criticizes the Capuchins for their ‘aloofness’ and failure to follow established Franciscan traditions in California, specifically mentioning a lack of ‘Franciscan courtesy’ during visits to local missions like Santa Barbara. Fr. Zephyrin claims that Fr. Albert Bibby’s first appearance at Santa Barbara was ‘hostile in the extreme’. Instead of following the custom of staying at the Mission, he stayed with the Jesuits and then moved to a ‘big hotel’, which Zephyrin describes as a lack of ‘Franciscan courtesy’.
