Scope and content

File containing copies of circular letters addressed to the Rochestown community from Fr. Peter Bowe OFM Cap., Provincial Minister. The content chiefly addresses the coordination of jubilarian celebrations honouring friars reaching major milestones of religious profession or ordination, arrangements and schedules for canonical provincial visitations, and various matters of routine institutional administration. Includes a letter (1 November 1918) enacting religious provisions in direct response to the 1918 influenza pandemic, officially dispensing all religious within the province from the mandatory ‘Fast of our Holy Rule’ traditionally slated to begin the following day on the Feast of All Souls. To combat the spread of the disease, the letter mandates liturgical adaptations, ordering communities to append a specific Versicle and prayer to St. Roch (the patron saint against pestilence) during their daily post-dinner visits to the Most Blessed Sacrament.
