Their subject is: ‘The Relationship between the Church and Trade Unions’. O’Riordan was in Moscow for May Day. Wonders what Eamon Byrne is doing here. Is he trying to start a branch of Connolly Association?

Typed statement from conversation with Una Byrne. She thinks there is a witch-hunt in Fianna Fail against the Knights of Columbanus carried out by the Masons and Senator Hartnett. Thinks there is a link between the IHA, the Fabian Society and the Republican Forum as the same people appear in these societies. She stated that Mrs McAuley is not satisfactory as regards the Adoption Board. She appears to be pursuing the wrong policy and has not paid much attention to the feelings of the adopters or the adopted. Mrs Byrne thinks that the school for Ballybrack parish will become an election issue, but the site is unsanitary and rat infested. Superintendent Boyle told Mrs Byrne that he will not deal with Fr. Crean as he was quoted by him.

Typed letter to Fr. Diffney. Regarding the education of the Differential Committee (of the Rent Association) the best policy is to let the men think that Fr. Divine is friend of hers (Mrs Byrne). She has asked him to have a chat with the men. Sean Brady met de Valera and made a great impression on him. He told Sean that he is in complete agreement with him. Next thing is to get a third man to replace Booth.

Typed letter to Fr. Martin [from Una Byrne name and address redacted]. A report on the Peace meeting held on 15 December in the Hibernian Hotel enclosed. Got an outline of Mrs. McAuley’s views on the Adoption Act. Efforts will be made to root Una Byrne out of power on the International Committee of IHA. Maurice Boothman has got a brain haemorrhage. Typed letter to Fr. MacMahon from Una Byrne. Jean and Hildegard Goss-Myar have been asked to attend a public meeting in November organised by the ‘Peace’ association. They may try to get speakers who would give an air of respectability to the meeting.

Copy of a typed letter from Fr. J.A. MacMahon to Mrs. Byrne. He is impressed with the report on the International Alliance of Women seminar in Sierra Leona and is impressed with its emphasis on education and co-operation

Handwritten letter to Liam from (Fr.) Jim Kavanagh, the Presbytery, Kilmacanogue. Says he wrote an acknowledgement, rather innocuous, to letter from J. Kelly. He thanked Kelly for his letter, and in a P.S. wrote “Congrats on your radio play. I did not hear it, but I am told it was good.” Kavanagh received a letter from Mrs Una Byrne saying that Kelly got a post on the Radio by using this letter. She apparently expected him to believe such nonsense.
