Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. Discussion centred on the function of the Special Committee. It was felt that the Committee could not furnish much factual information about subversive activities the Committee’s links with the Garda Authorities are gone. The Committee should take note of the broad trends …… and see if employers and employees are failing in their social duties. Acquisition of information regarding the internal activities of Trade Unions was essential this information is to come from the Special Committee in touch with Union leaders. Regarding subversives, the trend is stronger than ever before they are exploiting the present deteriorating state of industrial relations. There are genuine grievances on the side of workers. Apropos the Telephonists’ strike bad wages and administration obtain in some branches of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. CIE claims it is unable to give wage increases which the Joint Industrial Council has already approved. The case was cited of one employee of 25 years earning £9 a week. He has six children and needs assistance from the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In the private sector some employees are also neglected. The Committee concluded that “a general recall to restraint for the common good is needed.”
