Scope and content
This subseries comprises black and white prints dating from circa 1930 to 1939. It documents the activity of the Irish Capuchin friars in the United States, specifically in California, Oregon, Delaware, and Los Angeles.
California & Oregon: Includes interior and exterior shots of the Church of Our Lady of Angels (Burlingame), St. Joseph’s (Roseburg), and St. Lawrence of Brindisi (Watts). There are also several photos of First Communicants in Fort Bragg, California (1935-6).
Wilmington, Delaware (c.1936): A significant portion of the files (including CA WA/4/4/14 and 15) documents the opening of the Capuchin Novitiate (St. Patrick’s). This building was later transferred to the New Jersey Capuchins in 1963.
Prominent Figures: The photographs frequently feature Fr. Thomas Dowling OFM Cap., Fr. Joseph Fenelon OFM Cap., and Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. (notably during his 1936 visitation to the United States).
