The Irish Medical Association is opposed to the Proposals for improved and extended Health Services contained in the White Paper. The Proposals visualise State control of the medical profession and medical services; the Association is opposed to the provision of medical services free of direct charge to those who are able to pay or contribute towards the cost of these services.

Copy of typed letter to Sean Lemass, Tanaiste, from +McQuaid. The statement in the press by the I.M.A. rejects the free motherhood and infant scheme as proposed in the White Paper. The question is being asked: what is the view of the Hierarchy? The Hierarchy has abstained from comment as the Scheme is being considered by the Government. Asks that the Government will accord full weight to the most serious moral objections that he has brought to the Government.

Bernard Haring, C.SS.R. Fr. Haring was a leading signatory among 87 theologians in America who protested against the Encyclical Humae Vitae. Due to opposition Fr. Letter from Mgr. Cassidy to +McQuaid forwarding a reply from the Secretariat of State in relation to releasing Fr. Cyril White for service in the English language section of that Office. Taking into account his age and his ability, they request +McQuaid to allow him enrol in the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy with a view to him being appointed, eventually, to the diplomatic service. The matter has now been referred to Archbishop Paro, President of the Academy. His Holiness hopes the Archbishop will consent to this suggestion.

He was informed by the Tanaiste, Mr. Lemass, that the Archbishop had discussed aspects of the White Paper on Health Services with him. There was some misunderstanding of the provisions.
