Eve of the Assumption

Dear Father Prior
Since writing
to Dom
David I heard the Nurse
Rockwell College is leaving
as they are getting Nuns
to look after things.
enclose the answer I receiv
from
Sr. Mc Carthy
to the
letter I wrote asking
was
true
that Miss Foley
was leaving on receivin
this
this morning
Fr. McCarthy to communicate at
once with Miss Foley to hope
to get in touch
with her personally
very soon. In the meantime
you or Dom Gerard might
like to write to some of
your personal friends
among the Fathers as to
the character of Miss Foley
Miss O' Hanlon is a very
good nurse looks capable
is good at minding
She is bright and was
to. wards
much attracted
the spiritual atmosphere
at Glenstal she was
educated by the Holy Child
Nuns at Harrogate is I think
deeply religious without much
show + I feel Greenbank
if she came to MONKSTOWN
Glenstal as Nurse. Matron
she would be anxious
help in every way
to. wards
the success of the college.
She is very fond of children
She has no college experience
but has acted as Matron
in a hospital.
the finds the salary very
small + owing
to the
reasons I mentioned
in
my letter
to Dom David
could not possibily
take the position
at Glensta
I promised her
I would put
the
facts of her case before
you
- see if you would be
able to give a
salary on the
other hand she realizes how
difficult things must be
or you till the college
increases. I shall keep in
touch with (in case others
her
fail. The salary

should like very much to
know your wish on
this
Matter.
There is no use returning
to Glenstal till I am sure

Matron.
Before deciding

to whether
it is necessary

I would like
to know
you have any
more aplicati
for next term. Has
turned up
yet
I

they
have
decided
to send
their boy
to Glenstal
I regret
to have to say
fear the Fitzgeralds have
decided
to send their
boy to Clongowes, there
just
a very slight chance still
perhaps if you wrote enclosing
a prospectus or
Letter still if one o
the fathers were in town and
called. The Mother is not
keen on Clongowes. I shall
call this week + do my
best
I met Frank McCann on
Sunday, he did not seem
upset by the change,
he
is coming back
May I have the permission
to get somethings that are
necessary
or
the kitchen
and household at Glenstal.
As Mr. O' Toole in down with

in touch with two very fine

God to direct to. wards
the Medical Missionary Society
but I fear even if they do
join
the little company they
will not be free to come
tell November or December.
So I shall probably
have
to staff Glenstal with paid
hands
this term
I am very sorry to hear of
the illness of Br. Conrad I feel
very much for him he was so
- happy.
Are you satisfied with the
present cooking
I shall write I again when I hear
from Miss Foley
Please remember me to Dom
Various matters prior to Father Priors visit. From Mary Martin to Prior of Glenstal.
Dear Father Prior
This letter will probably reach you in time for the feast of the Immaculate Conception with all my very best wishes to you, all the community, teachers, boys, and staff. I shall be much united with Our Lady and you all on that day in special prayers and know you will not forget me in yours.
I have not written much lately as I await your visit to talk all matters over. Also, the getting up so early only for an hour leaves me very tired, and I have not been feeling quite so well the last few days. The big toe is still inclined to be septic, so I fear I shall not be allowed home this week but probably next week.
Hope you have good news of Rose
If she was insured she should of course
draw that from The day she left Glenstal
untill she is fit again On the other
hand if she is not qualified for the
Insurance you will have to pay her till she
goes home + give her notice that you are
not needing her next term.
I enclose the dining room equipment
book for Mai so that she will leave
all in order before she goes on her
holiday + hand over the silver to Fr
Hohn_ also he book with particulars of
maid up to time of my leaving Glenstal
the wages as received from nt John
to give him. I have £1. belonging to Mary
as you will see by her account.
Is it time that one of your Fathers
( a german) is at Beaumount ill. I was
told there was + I cannot think who it can
be. I hope if so he is not seriously ill.
Would it be too much trouble, if Matron has
the time to pack my things to bring them up
leave them at the Station my sister can call
for them- I enclose the key of small cupboard
you might give to Matron as all my letters
are in that + I should like to have
them when I get home _
I am not sure whether I shall be here
or at home when you come up but
all I wish to convey to you is that
you are heartily, welcome to stay at
Greenbank for a night or more if it
is convenient for you on the other hand
I quite understand Mr gooss is Mrs G. staf
will be more convenient as they are
nearer the city but if I were at home
you did not want to waste the day
hours with me you could come out when
you have all your business finished
have dinner then have a long talk
and stay the night. However I leave
everything to you to arrange as suits you
best.
With grateful thanks for everything
your obedient child in Jesus + Mary
Sr. Mary
We shall arrange about the staff when we meet
I asked Matron to give you all her views. M.M

FEAST OF THE HOLY ROSARY 1936
My dear Father Prior,
Many thanks for your very welcome letter received this morning from Downside. I am very pleased to hear you had such a cordial welcome and that the place impressed you so much.
It is encouraging to see what the good will of men can accomplish when cooperating with God's Adorable Will strengthened by His Grace. I am sure they had just as many difficulties as you have now, when they started. We must both go faithfully ahead each in our different works faithfully corresponding to divine grace, cutting out everything that stands in the way of accomplishing such a tremendous work as foundation. It absorbs all that is in us poor limited human beings and if we allow our energy and time to be frustrated elsewhere God's work for us will suffer. How much I saw this during my last seven months at Glenstal and the difficulty to make a break from what I loved and appreciated so much.
Do you mean me to do anything with Briscoe Lawlor in reference to the curb?
When you are back and settled down I shall be glad to hear from you how you think the staff are getting on; the reports from my Daughters [are] not too bright. I foresee... do not let things get out of hand as it would be serious for anything to happen this year. Has Miss Hayes said anything further to you? I fear Mai with all her goodness is not all we would require as I fear she is the cause of the grumbling. Also I fear Nora will not be able for the work, she is very young and soft.
I fear Mr Egan is not finished completely yet although Fr Whitney is bringing his priests and students into it to-day. But you will see something of it. Desmond is very anxious to meet you some time; now that you have been to Downside I have promised him a visit in the Xmas holidays, when we shall all see you I hope.
I hope you found all well on your return. Has Fr Milerton turned up? I hear he is in Ireland again. I hope you will hear from Mr French [ffrench] of Galway; I spoke of Glenstal for His Boys, and gave a prospectus.
I called at several places about stove for class-room; there are none of the stoves set in large enough in capacity of heat for the room so I send you down illustration of the "Romesse" etc. They suggest if you could find [the] second flue in the room to have a stove at each end of the room, as I showed you in the previous illustration. I await your instruction before going any further.
In union of prayer and love in the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Your ever grateful child for God,

Dear Father Prior
How am I to thank
you for saying Mass for me
- also asking +- Davidx
this gift is infinite oh if
I were only worthy ff all the
love + generosity you all have
shown me since I went
to Glenstal. Allowing me
to help in a very small
way in Glenstal I always
regard as a very great
privilege + now to be allowed
in Gods loving Providence to
suffer a little with Him for
His Fathers Glory leaves me in
a greater ditth thanever. I
may honestly, say there is
absolutely no reason for you
to feel any remorse if
there could be any fault it is
all on my side but really
I believed it is all in Gods
plan for my sanctification
His future Work + s think
also for Glenstal in a more
perhaps humble + hidden
way All I regret is the
inconvenience + extra work
I have been the cause of
laying on your shoulders +
for leaving
things in such
disorder
I feel very much for you
with your further cross +
anxiety over Rose I shall
pray much for hhr quick
I fear Mr O' Reilty will be
disappointed these things cannot
be helped + I thank you
very much for all the
trouble you have taken
I asked my brother to telephone
at once as S. O' Reilly
called in yesterday hoping
to meet Dom David who
would perhaps have good
news for them_ I am very
sorry it did not suit your
niece as it is a lovely
home + a real catholic
family.
I sucerely hope
Mc thorpes will her
better.
I know Mr Byme
well he is one of the
best know Architects in
Dublin a personal friend
our family.
theso circumstances I may grow
in greater love + union with God
My great difficulty is to over
come a terrible natural
dread I have of anaesthetics
but God gave me courage - great grace last time
He will not refuse me
again I know.
I am delighted to hear
about the Statue of Our Lady
being finished + in the Chapel
at must look very well
with Our holy Father St. Benedict - what a blessing that united
prayer of the whole of Glenstal
at Our Ladys
feet must
do for the individual souls
the monastery + school..
shall be with you all in spirit.
Sister Baptist knows Mr Thorpe
if you wish you could write
to her for any particulars.
I am glad to hear Lizzie
was able to get away to see
her Aunt I hope she
continues to give satisfaction
Will you please explain to
them, if they do not hear
from me for the next we
it is that they wish me
to rest more + shall not
be allow
to write much
after the operation for some
days I shall drop you
a line
you can give them
all the new. Tell them
I count
on their united
prayer_.
your English in improving
greatly I suppose you have
no difficulty in spanking
now at all.
Will you please remember me
to Dom Columba + say how
sorry I was to hear he had
to have all his teeth out
Also please remember me to
all the Fathers teachers boys - staff.
I had a very nice letter +
picture from Dom Gerard.
I shall drop him a line _
With all good wishes
grateful thanks for everything
in prayer.

MONKSTOWN
My dear i. Prior
To-day we sing the grand
Te Deum in thanksgiving
to
God for all the graces +
blessings of the old year my
praises go up to God thanking
Him for every thing especially
for the graces I received at
Glenstal + during
my illness
they were precious beyond
words next year I hope for as
all they will be even richer
even if it Means more toes .
I was very very pleased to see
Lizzie looking so well + happy
she too has greatly
improved
.
. she is
really happy at Glenstal + wants
to do her hest to please you all
I have written to Miss Leyden
to return to you on the 7 Jan.
if you would prefere her to
have a companion It could
send perhaps Miss Moynagh
or Miss O' Rourke till I am
able to go down myself. If
you would like this arrangement
then the work should be devided
they should have regular time
for prayer + if it were possible
to have instruction on the religious
life say once every two weeks
as well as the general instruction
to the maids They should be able
if there were two to undertake the
Fathers mending. Owing to financia
circumstances
would have to ask you MONKSTOWN
to give them their full keep laundry
etc. I think Dom Gerard arranged
with Fr. John that M.M.M. travelling
expenses were paid, he will be
able to tell you, it was
so but
I always tried to do all I
could as long as I was in
The position to do so as I
feel we would be more than
repaid for the little we could
do for Glenstal in the spiritual
formation we would receive
- the privilege
being
in
a religious atmosphere.
Now I am faced with all
the sure signs + blessing
a work
That is really Gods To be successful
at must live +
practise all the
characteris tie of far
Divine Lords Life. One
of the great blessings of last
year is M.M.M. starts in real
this
poverty like the spirit o
holy Season
Wee are doing all we can in
a quiet way up here to collect
enough friends to pay the fees,
for the nursing training
Please let me know what you
two were going I would
prefere_ I
like if possible that they had
instructions on the vows as I
think for the first few years
we shall have to remain as
secular with private vows
practising the works we propose
to undertake eventually as religious
I await my return or your will
looked forward visit to dicuss
all our future plans
for Glenstal + M.M.M. MONKSTOWN
As for Miss Hayes T.G. she
seems less better over the whole
thing - wrote to. day to ask
me when she might
expect
your visit.
you will not
hear further from
her unless
you write to her_
I hope
home
alright
fear
her time was
very
rushed
was very
good
her
give her
day
me.
The stumps are beginning to
show healthy signs of healing
I am still confined to bed +just

A case of patience
humility + perfect trust in God
